Effa Mae Adams

"Effie" was born 28 February 1866 in Porter Township, Van Buren County, MI. She married George Washington (Alford) Adams on 05 May 1891 and they had four children:

1. Harry Alford Adams (9 Aug 1891 - 24 Feb 1947) married Marian Elizabeth Saunders (12 Feb 1897 - 17 Sep 1974)

2. Helen Mabel Adams (b. 29 Jun 1895) married William Leon Kunce (b. 8 Mar 1897)

3. Hazel Grace Adams (14 Jul 1897 - 6 Nov 1995) married Claude Amasa Lewis (12 May 1886 - 11 Jun 1958)

4. Hyldred Eunice Adams (22 Dec 1900 - 9 Feb 1985) married Carroll Irving Gale (b. 16 Nov 1895)

NOTE: George Washington Alford (Junior) was the son of George Washington Alford (Senior) and Ann Marie Stewart. When the senior G.W. Alford died, young George moved in with Franklin Bildad Adams' family. George changed his name to Adams but was never formally adopted by Franklin Adams.

Mother of Coloman Dies; Rites Saturday
Funeral services will be held Saturday at Marcellus for Mrs. George W. Adams who died Wednesday morning at her home at Novi. A frequent visitor here, she is the mother of Mrs. C. Irving Gale of Coloma, who went to Novi earlier this week. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Marcellus.

Effie May Adams was born in Porter Township, near Lawton, Michigan, February 28, 1866. She was raised on the farm where she was born the eldest daughter of Uriah Mason and Jane Adams. In May, 1890, she was united in marriage to George W. Adams. Their early married life was spent in Marcellus, Michigan, later moving to Detroit, where Mr. Adams passed way on February 13, 1941. Mrs. Adams had one sister, Mrs. Mary Sykes, who lives in St. Joseph, Michigan, and four brothers, Chester, Archie, Mason and Ross, all of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Adams is survived by her daughter, Hazel, of Novi, with whom she made her home; Helen of Reno, Hyldred of Coloma and Jack, of Wayne, the eldest son Harry having passed away in 1947. There are eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. One grandson, Howard Adams Gale, the son of Hyldred and Irving Gale passed away after a short illness in 1 July, 1951. Effie Adams passed away February 10, just 18 days before her 88th birthday.


Effa Mae Adams

Effa Mae Adams (1866-1954) was born in the log cabin on the family farm in Porter Township. She attended country school and had a special interest in sewing.

She belonged to the Royal Neighbors Lodge and the Harmony Chapel Methodist Church. Later, she joined the Marcellus Evangelical Church.

She married George Wallace Adams on May 5, 1890 and they moved to Marcellus in 1894. Mr. Adams operated a livery barn and was also a teacher and mail carrier. They moved to Detroit in 1924. They had five children.

Harry lived in Redondo Beach, California. He married Marian Saunders and they had three children: Betty Jane, Alford and James. Harry died in 1947.

Helen (1895-1977) married William Kunce and lived in Reno, Nevada. They had two children; Mary Helen and Robert. Helen died in 1977.

Hazel followed the nursing profession and has lived in Detroit most of her life.

Hyldred was a teacher and she married Irving Gale. They lived in Coloma for many years. Their son, Howard died in 1951. They have a daughter, Barbara.

Jack lives in Ypsilanti and works for U.S. Truck. He married Louise Maggard in 1944. They have two children: William & Marilyn.
